My Little Pony is an entertaining franchise that was developed by the Hasbro brand, its line of toys had as a target audience children between 3 and 8 years old, which would not be known then, is that a few years later thanks to the Animated television series, My Little Pony would gain more ground and encompass an adult audience that became a fan of the characters and the values they conveyed, increasing the popularity of MLP.
It started with a line of plastic toy ponies that was developed by Bonnie Zacherle, Charles Muenchinger and Steve D’Aguanno, this production started in 1983, and whose main characteristics were to have colored bodies, also colorful manes and a symbol unique on one or both sides of the body.
Following the line of the original toy that was My Pretty and which was released to the market in 1981, “My Little Pony” was introduced to gondolas in 1983 and the line became popular during the 1980s. The entire line of original toys ran from 1983 to 1995 (from 1992 in the US), and was the inspiration for series and all audiovisual products that emerged from the success of the first season.
But the big MLP explosion didn’t happen until 2010 when the 4th generation emerged. Where the brand’s sales increased dramatically and they were able to raise $ 1 billion in retail sales in 20141 and $ 650 million in retail sales in 2013.
My Pretty Pony
It was a brown pony with white spots before the hooves and one on the face, with the blonde mane, some ties, a hair comb and a comb that is used for horses, an old farm type hat was put on and a red blanket, unlike any My Little Pony toy, this one did not have the side marks or cutie mark, although later a version was made with it, its eyes were blue and it had a lever on the neck that when moved, moved ears, blinked and wagging tail.
First generation (G1) 👈go there
In 1983 My Little Pony appears for the first time, thanks to the success of My Pretty Pony, the Hasbro brand was transferred. Its design was much smaller, always keeping the same pose that they brought from my pretty pony, but in this version they already began to incorporate pastel colors on the bodies and on the hair that were more similar to large manes, and already in this model They incorporated the cutie marks to the sides.
The G3 Generation started sales in 1997, in this version they changed the design of the mlp making them look thinner and with glass eyes, and incorporated rainbows on the legs, a design that was not well received by fans causing loss of followers and sales losses. In 1998 Hasbro Interactive released an Interactive CD-ROM called “My Little Pony: Frendship Gardens” which encouraged them to continue launching more G3 ponies. It is 1999 Hasbro decides to stop producing this version, although in other countries this generation managed to stay until 2000 and 2001 and in Europe until 2003
Third and a half generation (G3.5) 👈go there
During its development, the number of ponies, unicorns and pegasus began to be reduced to a minimum (the so-called Core 7), which were Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Cherrielee, Scootaloo, Toola Roola, the unicorn Swettie Belle and the Pegaso StarSong; and in 2009 the previous design was changed for a new one, which was smaller and with large heads, and the Pegasus had its wings replaced by those of a butterfly. These changes were not very pleasant for the public, and despite this he had an intense promotion such as the movie (Twinkle’s Adventure of Desires) and a mini series broadcast on the MLP page, which managed to sell much less than the G2. In 2010 this version would disappear.
Fourth generation (G4) 👈go there
